This map was created using a diversity index developed by USA Today. It assigns numbers between 0 and 1. The higher the number, the greater the diversity.

Think of it like this: When you walk out the door, what are the chances you'll run into someone who is of a different race and ethnicity? Downtown San Diego, for example has a diversity index of .508. That means you have about a 50-50 chance of encountering someone of a different race or ethnicity.

This map ranks all the communities in San Diego from most to least diverse.
